Violence had its origin way before Christ had been born. In fact, one of the reasons why Christ was born was to eradicate Violence. Ironically, the cause of his death was violence.
The World Health Organization defines violence as:
The intentional use of physical force or power, threatened or actual, against oneself, another person, or against a group or community, that either results in or has a high likelihood of resulting in injury, death, psychological harm, maldevelopment or deprivation.
Violence can be classified into 3 different types,
1. Self-Directed
2. Interpersonal
3. Collective
The Self Directed violence means causing harm to ones own self, the most common being the suicide. This kind of violence is generally prompted by situations which lead to the destruction of ones self esteem or cases where a person cannot see a the way to survival. Although many would call it an act of cowardice, this is the only way that seems suitable for people undergoing extreme stress.
The Interpersonal violence refers to violence against someone. This someone can be anyone, relatives, neighbors or a no-one. This kind of violence finds its way into the hot minded people who care about their own selfish reasons. These reasons may be small or big, but the consequences are dire. They not only cause psychological harm or depression but at times can lead to death.
Collective violence, the last classification of the many different types of violence is one is in which groups are involved instead of individuals. This kind of violence gets a huge amount of publicity and media coverage and may be prompted by causes affecting the masses and has the ability to disrupt law and order in the affected area. This kind of violence not only causes huge losses to property but can also lead to huge amount human losses.
Prevention of violence is one of the major issues in today’s world and is of primary concern. It is well known that violence cannot be stopped by mass extermination or killings, nor can it be stopped by letting people deal with it themselves as it will only increase the hatred. The only feasible way of eradicating this disease as of now is though mass education and inculcating the civic sense in the minds of the people. Another aspect that has to be worked upon is the kind of amenities within the grasp of the people, which if adequately provided, reduces the causes leading to violence.
